Hello World!

Welcome to my Technology Served blog. This is a new blog and it is designed to complement the services that I will be offering from this site, namely web design, development and consultancy.

In many ways, setting up this new site has made me feel like it is 1999 all over again and I am just starting out on a career as a webmaster. The thing is, I have actually been designing and developing websites and web applications for over a decade, but I have always worked for somebody else. Then, last month, I gave up my secure and well paid position as a PHP developer to go it on my own as a freelance webmaster.

As you can probably imagine, the decision to go freelance was not an easy one to make, but sometimes I think you just need to take a leap of faith and have some trust in your own abilities. So, here I am, a freelance webmaster. I am really quite excited about what lays ahead and hopefully with a little luck and a lot of hard work, I will be able to make real go of it.

So, what do I have to offer? Well, I should probably state that I am a generalist, not a specialist; this means I am competent in all fields related to web design and development. I have previously worked on many commercial web projects with clients ranging from small family businesses to large enterprises.

Currently, my preferred development stack is Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP. The frameworks I use are WordPress (I believe it can be referred to as framework) and CodeIgniter for rapid application development. Also, I use my own derivative of Debian GNU/Linux on the desktop and I am a competent Linux system administrator; I have numerous years experience of setting up and administering Linux servers and I love to work remotely via the command line, as well as coding BASH and shell scripts.

If you are interested in working with me, or know somebody who might be, please see my contact page for ways to get in touch.

Finally, I just want to say a huge thank you to my family and friends, especially my wife, Becky, who has been amazingly supportive in helping me to get this far. If it was not for her, I would still be working for the man. THANK YOU!

P.S. Stay tuned for news, updates, information, opinions and links to interesting web design and development topics.
